CM is also collecting pillows, pillowcases, toiletry items, and such for the Homeless men who will be at Camp Orchard Hill for the season beginning Dec. 12. There will be a meeting of the mission committee on Thursday Dec. 8 to discuss the meal CM will provide.

After consultation with Jon Buxton, our new DS, the times for the Charge Conference meeting next Sunday (10/16) has been moved to 12:00 for PPR and 12:30 for the meeting itself. Both meetings will be located at Center Moreland. This will be our new DS’s first time with us, so the meeting will be his opportunity to know our two churches better!

The annual meeting for the Charge with the district has been scheduled for October 16 at 1:30, with PPR meeting at 1:00. Both meetings will be located at Center Moreland. This will be our new DS’s first time with us, so the meeting will be his opportunity to know our two churches better!

NOXEN COMMUNITIES NEED TEAMS FOR CLEANUP – Please contact the District Office for any teams who would be available for cleanup.

Noxen Old School as a drop off for linens and clothing.

Plains UMC - will be giving out brand new and gently used clothes for all genders and sizes, to all who need clothes. The church will be open for the clothes distribution on Friday the 16th from 4p-7p; Saturday the 17th, 1p - 5p; Sunday the 18th, 11a - 5p. For more information, or questions please call 822-2730.

Lake Winola UMC Church is open from Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 AM to 8 PM and Thursday from 1PM to 8 PM for drop off of Clothing, food or household items.

COCU (Kingston) – items for flood buckets (cleaners, paper towel, etc..)

The Shoemaker Mission Central HUB (8th Street, West Wyoming) will be open all day today, Tuesday, and currently Wednesday afternoon from 1 pm to 6pm in order to accept any donations of cleaning supplies for the cleaning buckets. We have 140 empty cleaning buckets, we need the supplies to fill them. Also linens can be dropped off.

Well Done, Center Moreland and Dymond Hollow!

These pictures were taken this morning when my car was loaded to take clothing to the Lake Winola UMC clothes dopoff for the flood victims. The car is loaded all the way back to behind the drivers row, floor to ceiling, with the back seats down. Nicely done, keep it coming! I 'll be checking both churches again on Thursday morning!

Volunteer Opportunities

From the Wilkes Barre District Office:

Clean up teams needed for West Pittston, Meshoppen, Plains and West Nanticoke as soon as possible. Teams would be cleaning mud out of basements. If you or your church can volunteer, please contact the district office at 570-696-1349 or lthornton@susumc.org, if the office is closed, you can contact Doug Sivers at dsivers@susumc.org . We are looking for teams to cover this week, so let us know what days or evening (until dark) you can volunteer so we can coordinate with the contacts from the flooded areas.

West Nanticoke is also in need of drinks for volunteers and victims (bottled water, soda, gatorade)

***Note to Volunteers*** - If there is Petroleum products or raw sewage in basements, don’t enter due to health risks. Always use face masks and rubber gloves.

If you are a church that has had teams dispatched to any flood zones, please send the number of volunteers, the hours they worked and the location. This information is important to obtain grants and flooding.

If you know of any other needs in these areas, please contact the district office.

A Prayer for the Anniversary of 9/11

O God, our hope and refuge,
in our distress we come quickly to you.
Shock and horror of that tragic day have subsided,
replaced now with an emptiness,
a longing for an innocence lost.
We come remembering those who lost their lives
in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.
We are mindful of the sacrifice of public servants
who demonstrated the greatest love of all
by laying down their lives for friends.
We commit their souls to your eternal care
and celebrate their gifts to a fallen humanity.
We come remembering
and we come in hope,
not in ourselves, but in you.

Hurricane and Flood Relief: For ways to respond to the relief following Hurricane Irene and the recent flooding, please see the flyer available in the back.
Forkston: The Red Cross and Salvation Army have pulled out of Forkston but the people still need help. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, Mission Central in Mechanicsburg stands ready with cleaning buckets to assist in flood cleanup relief throughout Pennsylvania, the Northeast, and mid-Atlantic states. United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) will direct relief efforts through the region affected by the storm.

Persons are invited to contribute cleaning bucket materials to Mission Central at 5 Pleasant View Drive, Mechanicsburg or at any of twenty-three Mission Central HUBS in the Northeast. Contributions for purchase of cleaning materials for cleaning buckets are welcome at missioncentral.org.

Mission Central was formed in 2002 by United Methodists in Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania to connect God's resources with human need through mission education, mission outreach and disaster response. UMCOR Assesses Response to Pacific Emergency
March 11, 2011 — The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is connecting with partners to assess damages and needs resulting from the powerful 8.9-magnitude earthquake and 33-foot-high tsunami that rocked Japan today.

As the tidal wave rolls across the Pacific, tsunami warnings have been issued throughout the region, from Japan to Chile. Small islands are in danger of being completely covered by the tidal wave, and developing countries are especially vulnerable, a Red Cross spokesperson told Reuters news agency.

The quake hit in the middle of the afternoon, at 2:46 Tokyo time, just off of Honshu, Japan’s most populous island. It is the strongest earthquake to hit Japan in the 140 years that records have been kept. It takes the place of last year’s earthquake in Chile as the fifth strongest ever anywhere in the world.

“UMCOR is closely monitoring the unfolding situation in the Pacific,” said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response.

“We’re in contact with our partners in the region, mindful of the still developing emergency in Japan as well as of the risk to other countries, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, and to Hawaii, which are expected to be impacted by the tsunami,” she said.

UMCOR head, the Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, urged prayers for those affected by the disaster. She said that as needs become clarified, UMCOR will respond.

“Once again, in the wake of disaster and in the face of widespread need, we rely on the ever expansive generosity of United Methodists and all people of goodwill to help us respond to those whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down,” she said.

So far, 300 deaths have been reported in Japan, but as relief and recovery efforts get underway, the number of deaths and injured is expected to rise much higher.

The 33-foot tsunami barged into the port of Sendai in northeastern Japan, pushing buildings, cars, ships—everything in its path, far inland. In Tokyo, the quake disrupted electricity and ground and air transportation— and sent people fleeing from office buildings and homes for the safety of parks and other open areas.

Pastor Appreciation Month! October is Pastor Appreciation Month, a time to honor and say thank you to the men and women who do more than any others to inspire us to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

“Ms Centermoreland Fair Queen” contest…. You need a talent and answer questions for the judges, and don’t forget your pageant gown! On September 11, 2010, the local churches of the Susquehanna Annual Conference will be asked to ratify the following standards for its leaders.
"The Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development may also want to consider the following seven essential behaviors for leaders in a local church:
- Understands and accepts their role in leadership.
- Is always looking forward instead of looking back.
- Is committed to being in worship weekly.
- Is committed to at least one Bible study/small group/Sunday School class
- Is committed to and does tithe - or is making a conscious effort to step up to tithing.
- Is involved in at least one outreach mission trip/work camp a year or regularly participates in a hands-on mission endeavor as much as their physical ability allows.
- Is always publically and privately supportive of the pastor and the church."

Church Family Tree – Nov 21 CM will be decorating the church and tree for the Advent season. Bring an ornament for the tree that is meaningful to you and/or your family. If you want the ornament back after Christmas, put a tag on it with your name. Ornaments can be left in the back of the church before Nov 21st. Please come and help decorate. A sign up sheet is in the back of the church for a light supper of soup and sandwiches.

Studio Go! Game Show; Vacation Bible School at Center Moreland United Methodist Church. This week! Tomorrow’s session starts at 8:30, for registration, and the rest of the days start at 9. There will be a parents’ program on Friday evening. Each day at Studio Go! Game Show, the children and youth will participate in the large group-music, skits, Bible stories, crafts, refreshments, games, and special mission projects where the children will be encouraged and motivated to go out and serve others. The Bible stories will be applied to their everyday life. The challenges will help the kids : Go Lead! Go Risk! Go Tell! Go Obey! Go Serve! and to understand how God works in their lives of those who trust Him. Preregistration is strongly encouraged for planning purposes and supplies. Game Show, the children and youth will participate in the large group-music, skits, Bible stories, crafts, refreshments, games, and special mission projects where the children will be encouraged and motivated to go out and serve others. The Bible stories will be applied to their everyday life. The challenges will help the kids : Go Lead! Go Risk! Go Tell! Go Obey! Several events are scheduled for this summer;
Sermon Series: Pastor Drew will preach a 7 week series on the Book of Acts, beginning June 28. A Bible study accompanying this series begins on Wednesday June 24, 7:00 at Center Moreland.
Book Discussions: You are invited for two informal discussions this summer. On July 30, we will discuss the book The Shack, by William Young. On August 27, we will discuss the book Velvet Elvis, by Rob Bell. Both book discussions begin at 7:00, and the site for each will be determined between Center Moreland and Dymond Hollow.

Praise Band: The band will play in the 11:00 service at CM on July 12 and August 9.

Ink Cartridge Collection: If you have old ink cartridges of any kind you don’t know how to dispose of, bring them down to Center Moreland UMC, the youth are collecting them as a service project. For more information, call or see Christopher Howell.

Free to Good Home, speaking of ink cartridges: Pastor Drew has recently changed printers, and has no need any longer for black, magenta or yellow cartridges, still sealed, for an Epson C88 printer.

Crayon Can Project: We are collecting old and broken crayons. Rather than be thrown away and take decades to biodegrade, they will be melted and reformed into fun shapes, and given to special needs or sick children. For more information, please go to www.crayoncan.com, or contact Melinda Smith.

Lent Services: Dates are set for the Wednesdays of Lent, all starting at 7:30.

The theme will be the Old Testament passages from the lectionary, and the offering for the services will be taken for Mission Central, the UMCOR warehouse in Harrisburg. Weather Note: If Tunkhannock School district has closed the day of the service, the service is cancelled.

Special Class for Lent: This Lent, Pastor Drew will focusing on the book Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living, by Rueben P. Job. John Wesley’s words and thought can give us good guidance for how to live as Christians today by following three simple rules; Do no Harm, Do Good, and Stay in Love with God. Bishop Job’s basic text will be available at the beginning of Lent, and books for the class, for both youth and adults, which will be offered on Monday nights at 7:30, will be available as well.

Praise Band Worship Leadership: The schedule for the spring is as follows:

Wyoming Conference Local Pastor Licensing School: will be held at Sky Lake from March 29 - April 3 and then again from April 26 - May 1. The cost is $900. For further information, please contact the District Office, 696-1349 or wbdistrict@frontiernet.net.
